Psion rides out the bumps
Article Abstract:
David Potter, founder and chairman of Psion, an innovative and successful UK computer company, has mixed feelings about his decision in 1988 to go for public ownership. When floated the shares were 97 pence and rose to 374 pence within a year, then collapsing within another two years to 40 pence. These figures mirror the profits. The Organiser, a pocket version of the Filofax, was very popular in the mid-80's but when in 1989 the company went into notebook computers they miscalculated the demand for peripherals. By the time they had reacted, the Japanese electronics firms had raced past them in the notebook field. Psion is, however, doing well with its miniature modems.

Putting his trust in the profitability of heading east
Article Abstract:
There are strong arguments in favour of investing in eastern Europe, according to Peter Kysel, head of John Govett's New European Investment Co. He believes that many parts of eastern Europe will see extremely rapid expansion, especially as inflation is now under control and budget deficits have fallen. Those countries which have undertaken most radical reform have been most successful in setting up effective capitalist economies.
