What triggers the gun culture?
Article Abstract:
A recent case in the US where a householder shot dead a Japanese student who just happened to knock at the wrong door brought to light the fact that the US gun death rate per head is 160 times that in Japan. The US has the highest violent crime rate in the world but most Americans support the right to carry and use guns. The spirit of the frontier has been offered as the reason but it is more likely a trait in the American character. There are 200 million guns in the US and 4.2 million new ones are sold every year.

Lost leaders in need of an enemy
Article Abstract:
All western governments are short-term in 1993. The EC turned the civil war in former Yugoslavia into international conflict by recognising new states before the conflicts had been resolved. Television brings international problems to a huge audience, who expect action from the politicians.Negative comment during President Clinton's first six months in office and discussion about the possiblity of ending the monarchy in the UK show that the end of the Cold War removed deference and discipline in the West.
