Rail passengers fight to save one-way service
Article Abstract:
There is considerable uncertainty about the future of the two train stations at Sinfin, an industrial suburb of Derby, England. At present, these stations are served from the main station in Derby by a taxi service, as the modern trains used by Central Trains cannot run on the old-fashioned track. Franchising director John O'Brien is now seeking the closure of the line, while one of the regular users of the taxi service and Derby City Council claim that the closure of stations goes against the government's policy of promoting public transport.

Prescott wins fight for green tax on cars
Article Abstract:
UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott seems to be making progress towards implementing a system of hypothecation, under which local authorities will be permitted to retain the money they raise from vehicle emissions tests, parking and congestion charging and use it to improve public transport provision. In the long term, this approach could dramatically reduce car use and improve standards of bus, railway and tram services. Economists regard it as a significant shift in taxation philosophy.

'Spies' to pose as travelers to test rail inquiries
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom railroad companies may have their passenger information assessed by the industry regulator. Investigators may be used to pose as passengers and call to obtain information. A previous investigation has been criticised by the railroad operators as out of date, and they argue that their information services have improved. The industry regulator is unconvinced, especially since he himself has been given the wrong information on trains.
