A broad church in Brixton
Article Abstract:
The multicultural, bohemian south London district of Brixton has a range of attractions, but until now has lacked a theatre. However, actress Josette Bushell-Mingo is now opening the Brix, a theatre located in the converted church of St Matthew. Her company, Aspect Theatre, is soon to put on a production of Lorca's 'The House of Bernarda Alba,' and she hopes to encourage experimental performance work and writing schemes with black and Asian writers.

No more fog on the Tyne
Article Abstract:
Newcastle tends to have a negative image, being seen as a place of violence and poverty. However, it is enjoying considerable cultural regeneration, with the Northern Stage theatre company, for example, now being resident at the Newcastle Playhouse and attracting large audiences. This is mainly due to the influence of artistic director Alan Lyddiard, who has taken up the challenge of working in a city with a very strong identity.
