Rape victim who came out of the dark

Article Abstract:

Muriel Harvey, 67, was attacked and raped while on her way home after attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Morning 1992. She was a churchwarden and former magistrate and the attack shocked the town of Ludlow, Shropshire, UK. The attacker has not been caught but Mrs Harvey has become a celebrity, appearing on television in an attempt to help other women benefit from her experience. She said she was angry but calm and thinks a younger woman would have found the experience much more difficult to deal with. She would like the perpetrator, when caught, to he flogged and then helped.

The Twelve Just Men vigilante group in Newtown, Wales deal with burglars by putting a ferret down their trousers. The rural town's population doubled between 1982-1992. Police in cars fail to catch thieves, so the vigilante group patrol the seven housing estates and three industrial estates. The vigilantes are fit, middle-aged, family men. The police disapprove but local residents appreciate the help. Dyfed-Powys police force statistics show a 57% detection rate for Newtown, but sentences are lenient.

'The Glass Pig,' a pub in Tarrington, Hereford and Worcester, England, is owned by Edward and Janet Donohue who run the Midsomer Trust homes for people in their 20's and 30's with severe learning difficulties. Landlords had turned these people away from regular pubs, but socialising is important for them. They enjoy getting ready for the outing and spending their own money. Most of them play darts or pool with the local customers and enjoy the music.
