Car sales booming despite slide in economy
Article Abstract:
There was an 11.6% rise in new car registrations in the UK in Jul 2001 from the year-earlier period, with most growth coming from private purchases. The short-term prospects for the market seem positive, but questions are being raised about whether sales growth can be sustained against the background of an economic downturn.

Record R-reg sales 'not a sign of overheating.' (record car sales in United Kingdom in Aug 1997 do not indicate that economy is overheating)
Article Abstract:
New car sales in the UK reached a record 525,539 in Aug 1997, from 479,945 in Aug 1996, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Sales for the whole of 1997 are forecast at 2.1 million, from 2.03 million in 1996. However, this does not mean that the economy is overheating or that an unsustainable consumer boom is taking place, according to Ford Chairman Ian McAllister. He emphasizes that sales were boosted by special factors, including very high levels of marketing activity.

Rocky road ahead for the car industry
Article Abstract:
It is widely expected that the UK car industry will begin to face significant challenges. New car sales are forecast to exceed 2 million again in 1998, but demand has been declining significantly since summer 1998. It is also expected that demand will decline further in 1999, with sales possibly slumping by between 5% and 6%. Manufacturers are having to compete fiercely on price, and this is having a negative impact on the second-hand market, prompting a dramatic fall in residual values of nearly-new models.
