Redwood: the Jacobin Tory

Article Abstract:

John Redwood, who is standing against John Major in the battle for the leadership of the Conservative party, shares many of the views of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. He is opposed to European federalism and a single currency, and believes that the state should play a much smaller role in providing welfare services. He has an extremely strong intellect and is politically shrewd, although this can sometimes make him seem cautious about taking the Conservative party further towards the right.

So tax cuts can be paid for from savings in public spending?

Article Abstract:

The UK government could use spending cuts to finance tax reductions, but this would cause considerable problems and greatly damage its credibility. Only a really radical measure would have a real impact on spending, but there are very few options available. The government has made many commitments in the past which now dictate spending, and no suitable short-term measures are available.

Some tough things to digest

Article Abstract:

Social security secretary Peter Lilley is one of the few cabinet ministers who has improved his reputation over recent years. He has gained a reputation for expressing dogmatic right-wing views, but has also attracted admiration for his serious and methodical approach. He is developing a very different approach to social security, particularly by increasing private provision.
