'Statesman' staggers from crisis to crisis
Article Abstract:
Political magazines of the left have not really thrived in the UK. The 'New Statesman' had close links with the old-style Labour party, but is far removed from present Labour party leader Tony Blair and his associates. There have been rumours that the magazine's editor, Steve Platt, is under pressure to resign so that he can be replaced with someone who will strongly promote Blair's views, but this seems far removed from the reality. The future of the magazine is now in some doubt.

An ugly aesthetic alive and thriving
Article Abstract:
The reunification of west and east Germany led to east Germans in many professions losing their jobs as their work was taken over by west Germans who were generally better qualified. This has caused considerable resentment in east Germany. However, theatre is one area which seems to have escaped this trend. Indeed, theatres in west Germany have been closing down while those in east Germany have survived. The Volksbuhne company has been particularly successful.
