Refugees vanish quietly into the night
Article Abstract:
The International Red Cross believes that 200,000 East Timorese have fled from their homes or been forced to leave. Many have travelled to Indonesian West Timor, where anti-independence militias have begun launching violent attacks too. Many refugees have been sheltering in the United Nations compound in Dili, East Timor, but are beginning to leave following the decision to withdraw most or all of the staff of the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor.

'As I talk to you, my people here are dying.'
Article Abstract:
Very large numbers of East Timorese have now been driven out of their homes by militias and the Indonesian army. Many are seeking the protection of Falintil, the Armed Liberation Forces of East Timor, fleeing to the remote jungle areas where the guerrillas are now based. They are facing a severe shortage of food, water and medical supplies, and some have already died. There are also indications that the militias and soldiers are moving into the mountains.

This is a controlled carnage, directed by local police
Article Abstract:
Attacks by the Aitarak militia have created an extremely tense situation in East Timor. In the town of Dili, 2,000 refugees are sheltering in the compound of the International Red Cross, while a further 3,000 to 4,000 have fled to the garden of East Timor's bishop, Carlos Belo. A total of 150,000 people have been displaced as a result of the conflict. There is evidence that the attacks are being encouraged and controlled by Indonesian security forces.
