The lost and helpless flee from Hell to the hills
Article Abstract:
Increasing numbers of Turks made homeless by an earthquake are fleeing to the hills, away from towns and cities where their homes have been destroyed. Many areas are unsafe even for bulldozers. Four large towns, Adapazari, Golcuk, Yalova and Ismit, may be razed. In Adapazari, hospital wards overflow into the open, and there is not enough transportation to ferry people to see specialists in Ankara, the capital. A proper camp has been set up, but refugees have also set up independent camps on hillsides, and they do not know where they can obtain help or instructions.

Turkey's paradise prepares for its death
Article Abstract:
The South-East Anatolia Project, which covers the construction of 22 dams on the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, will involve the flooding of villages in the valley of the Euphrates. Residents of the valley were promised compensation by the Turkish government, but so far have received only one-third of the money. Land has been set aside for government-built houses, but little progress has been made so far. The project will also mean that valuable relics from Zeugma, a very large Graeco-Roman town in the valley, are submerged.
