Relegating Old Trafford to a game show
Article Abstract:
The decision by media magnate Rupert Murdoch to attempt to buy Manchester United football club has attracted considerable controversy. It is clear that Murdoch aims to monopolize top-level football in the UK, but it is important to approach this challenge rationally, rather than becoming too emotional about the future of football. Murdoch's opponents must be aware that he will have many arguments of his own, including the fact that BSkyB is taking a considerable risk and that many new jobs will be created.

Licence deal gives ITV firms 90m pounds sterling a year
Article Abstract:
The UK Independent Television Commission has reduced its franchise charges to ITV companies by more than 90 million pounds sterling a year. It has also made changes to the way in which ITV companies will pay for their licences in the future. Payments will now be more closely connected with advertising income, rather than simply being a large annual lump sum. Digital television will receive a significant boost because it will not be taxed in the way that ITV is at present.

Football frenzy grips media
Article Abstract:
UK media concerns are becoming increasingly interested in football clubs, particularly in the light of British Sky Broadcasting's (BSkyB) 623.4 million pounds sterling bid for Manchester United. It is common for sports clubs to be owned by media groups outside the UK, but this has always been regarded negatively in the UK. However, broadcasters now realize that they must respond to BSkyB's move if they are to retain control of broadcasting rights.
