Resign? Over his dead body
Article Abstract:
Russian President Boris Yeltsin is clearly in a very poor state, both mentally and physically. However, he was determined to attend the funeral of King Hussein of Jordan, contrary to the advice of his doctors. This is because he was desperate to revive his international status and because he did not wish to be seen to be giving over power to Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov. He has been responsible for some positive developments in Russia, including freedom of speech, but most Russians greatly dislike him and other world leaders regard him with pity and dismay.

Yeltsin casts out his Rasputin
Article Abstract:
A power struggle between the democrats who have played a key role in the election campaign of Russian president Boris Yeltsin and a group of close associates of the president, who were concerned losing their power, has led to the dismissal of General Alexander Korzhakov, head of the presidential guard, General Mikhail Barsukov, head of the federal security service, and Oleg Soskovets, a first deputy prime minister. This development is regarded as a victory for the democrats, but also indicates that democracy has only a very weak footing in Russia.

Kremlin prepares for life after Yeltsin
Article Abstract:
It is widely believed in Russia that the political career of president Boris Yeltsin is coming to an end, even though he has been able to overcome many difficulties. It is likely that he will soon be obliged to admit that his health is no longer good enough to allow him to remain president. There are now clear indications that the political establishment is making preparations for Yeltsin's departure. There is particular concern about the possible actions of Alexander Lebed, who is favourite to win an early election.
