Return of the free lunch
Article Abstract:
Growing competition for advertising is the main reason why Microsoft decided to stop charging for access to Slate, its online magazine. Microsoft felt that maintaining charges would limit the magazine's advertising potential. There will still be a charge for electronic mail services, and Slate will also charge for its archives and the weekly print edition. Slate publisher Rogers Weed has emphasized that the decision to stop charging for access will be regularly re-evaluated, but it seems unlikely that charges will be reintroduced, especially as advertisers do not appear to place special value on reaching paying subscribers.

Can Nixon be rehabilitated?
Article Abstract:
Former president, Richard Nixon, has become part of popular culture in the US, and is remembered more for the circumstances of his departure from the White House than from his work as president. Nixon sought to restore his reputation until he died in 1994, and he has been successful in a number of ways. Irwin Gellman's work 'The Contender' presents Nixon in a favorable light on some issues. Watergate is likely to be reassessed as part of the political trends of the 1970s, and Nixon's actions may become more understandable with time.

Shifting web of digital alliances
Article Abstract:
Complex networks of alliances and cross-ownership are beginning to emerge between major players in technology and communications. Microsoft has been particularly active in this process, focusing on interactive services and the Internet. Along with AT&T and TCI, Microsoft controls a large proportion of what may develop into the information superhighway. Some observers believe that cooperation between leading players could have negative repercussions if it creates monopolies.
