UK: KEY FIGURE SCEPTICAL OVER CANCER STATISTICS
Article Abstract:
Doubts over recent figures showing the UK to have one of the worst cancer-related fatality rates in the Western world were expressed on 9 November 1999 by Scotland's cancer services leader, Dr Harry Burns. The Eurocare II study revealed that for some cancers, Estonia had the highest survival rate among the 17 countries examined over 1978 to 1989. However, Dr Burns noted that the UK system for registering cancer-related deaths is more strict than in other countries. He pointed out also that someone with cancer who died of a heart attack would be categorised as a cancer-related fatality.

UK: TIMING IS CRITICAL IN BREAST CANCER SURGERY
Article Abstract:
A study of pre-menopausal women who undergo breast cancer surgery has shown that the chances of survival are much improved if operations are undertaken in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Doctors at Guy's Hospital London say that the survival rate for women who have surgery in the later, or luteal, phase, is 75% after 10 years, compared to 45% for those who had their operation in the follicular phase. This is because the tumour is much firmer and less likely to 'spill' in the latter phase. The team believes that post-menopausal women could also benefit from timed surgery.
