UK: MOVE TO REDUCE SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY
Article Abstract:
The UK government will reveal a raft of measures on 19 June 2000 designed to substantially cut the proportion of women who smoke during pregnancy, by 2005 and 2010 to 18% and 15% respectively. The GB[pound] 1mn anti-smoking initiative follows research showing that one in four mothers-to-be smokes, putting the well-being of her unborn child in danger. Expectant mothers will be given more support, coupled with moves to extend mid-wife care for a number of months after giving birth in an attempt to deal with post-natal depression. A telephone hotline run by Quit, the anti-smoking charity, will offer help specifically for expectant mothers after obtaining a three-year, GB[pound] 600,000 contract from the Department of Health.

SWEDEN: LINK BETWEEN HPV VIRUS & CERVICAL CANCER
Article Abstract:
Scientists from Upsala University and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found a link between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the development of cervical cancer. It is believed that doctors have developed a test that can be used on young women to detect if they are likely to develop the cancer later in life. The HPV virus is known to cause genital warts and is present in around 40% of women, but many carry the virus without actually developing any warts. Women that carry the top 20% level of the virus are said to be 60 times more likely to develop cervical cancer in eight years time than those who do not carry the virus.
