Sally Purcell
Article Abstract:
Poet and translator Sally Purcell read Medieval and Modern French at Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford University, England. She was greatly involved with the university's Poetry Society, and published her poems in undergraduate magazines. She lived a very austere life, and did not really come to terms with modern technology. She earned a modest living by typing, and also undertook some proof-reading work. She seemed at odds with modern society, as she was mainly interested in the classics and the writers of medieval France and Italy.

It could be different this time
Article Abstract:
Mixed views are being expressed about whether the UK economy will experience a soft or a hard landing. The business community anticipates a hard landing, while the government believes that economic growth can be slowed down without being brought to a complete halt. An analysis of past recessions indicates that policy errors present a greater danger to the economy than the economic cycle. For this reason, the forthcoming meeting of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee will be very significant.

A tax holiday could cure Government's economic headache
Article Abstract:
The impending slump in Britain could be avoided with a strong fiscal stimulus and looser monetary policy, as in Sep 1931 when Britain departed from the gold standard. The Plowden Report of 1961 which describes the stop-go business cycle should be considered. A tax holiday whereby no income tax or VAT is collected for two months would reset the economy on the 3.5% growth planned in the Chancellor's 1992 budget. A major cause of the recession is the effect of debts accumulated in the 1980s.
