Saved from the nation
Article Abstract:
In the middle of the nineteenth century French painting was treated with contempt by the British authorities and was therefore not acquired by British galleries. The neo-classicism of the French was considered to be austere and cold, the slightly earlier material also out of favour due to accusations of too much violence. Now tastes and opinions have changed but it is too late, works by David, Gericault and Delacroix now being in the multi-million pounds price range. In adition few are in private hands so even if the money was avilable to buy there would be little opportunity.
