A map does not a nation make
Article Abstract:
Outsiders involved in trying to find a solution to Africa's problems, such as western governments and the World Bank, have widely differing views on the best approach, and this is not helping Africa at all. The solutions proposed by outsiders are often far removed from the continent's realities, and there are often very misguided views on the causes of political instability. It is now vital that outsiders take into account what is really happening in Africa, especially the development of new networks of power and wealth.

Eritrea nears end of road to freedom
Article Abstract:
The Eritreans have fought for independence for 30 years, so the referendum on Apr 23, 1993 is expected to result in a 'yes' vote. Ethiopia colonised Eritrea and a guerilla war commenced in 1962. Soviet supplied troops attacked Eritrea in 1978. Eritrea's coastal strip beside the Red Sea is strategically important, so the superpowers prefer it not to be independent. In the 1970s African liberation movements evaded the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) as it was fighting a socialist state.

Africa's uneasy walk to freedom
Article Abstract:
Pressure from Western countries has pushed African countries towards democracy, but as one party states and military rules collapse, old disputes re-emerge. Refusal of Western aid is driving individual countries to hold elections and Kenya, Mauritiania and Mali lead the way. Other countries such as Nigeria are slowly creating civilian governments, but in areas such as Somalia and Ethiopia old divisions have surfaced and resulted in uprisings.
