Scores of trawlers 'at risk of sinking.'
Article Abstract:
Normal operational movements of derricks and fishing gear may significantly cut the stability of beam trawlers, according to a report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch into the sinking of the 'Margaretha Maria' in Nov 1997. There are more than 130 beam trawlers in the UK fishing fleet. These vessels, which have two large derricks, thus permitting fishing on both sides of the boat at the same time, are very profitable. The report indicates that the 'Margaretha Maria' probably sank because of a large weight of debris in her raised nets.

Curtains unfold to reveal the secret world of our offshore tax havens
Article Abstract:
A UK government review of financial regulations relating to offshore tax havens has called for dedicated financial crime units to be established on Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man to look into criminal activity such as tax evasion and money laundering. The review states that there is concern that there is insufficient information about many companies operating on these islands. It calls for the authorities on Jersey to take more action to cooperate with other countries to investigate money laundering and financial crime.

Anger at 'feeble' secrecy Bill
Article Abstract:
There has been extensive criticism of the UK government's draft Freedom of Information Bill, with many observers claiming that it lacks real power. Home Secretary Jack Straw has stated that the Bill will give everybody the right of access to data held by public sector authorities. However, Charter 88, which campaigns to modernize democracy in the UK, believes that a culture of secrecy will persist in the civil service. The Campaign for Freedom of Information has also expressed disappointment.
