Sounds of blackness
Article Abstract:
EMI's CD 'The Big Score' focuses on the music that accompanied black films in the early to mid-1970s. It begins with the 1970 Quincy Jones song 'They Call Me Mister Tibbs' and ends with Rose Royce's 'Car Wash,' which marked the beginning of the decline of funk music in 1976. The music is a strong reflection of the intensity and trauma that characterized black life in inner cities after the collapse of the civil rights movement. Notable soundtracks include 'The Mack' and 'Foxy Brown' by Willie Hutch.

The original blues brothers
Article Abstract:
The Chess Records label, created in 1947 by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, has been closely associated with blues music and black rock'n'roll. The brothers began by signing local artists in Chicago, IL, and soon became associated with performers such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Buddy Guy. The label's success continued into the 1960s, when it experimented with doo-wop and soul music. It was sold to GRT in 1969, but the Chess brothers retained the publishing rights.
