Scotland thwarted
Article Abstract:
Labour party leader Tony Blair claims to be very concerned about the issue of devolution for Scotland, especially as this forms part of his wider plans for constitutional reform. However, some observers feel that his commitment to home rule for Scotland could waver if the Labour party were to become the party of government. He seems to be placing barriers in the way of the creation of a tax-raising Scottish parliament, and it now seems unlikely that any real progress towards Scottish devolution will be made under a Labour government.

How they stitched together a tartan deal
Article Abstract:
The recent agreement between the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats on a new devolved Scottish parliament is extremely significant. The two parties have been able to put aside their differences, and have taken an approach which could lead to extensive changes in the way Scotland is governed. Labour leaders feel that it is important to gain the support of the Liberal Democrats, as experience has shown that Labour backbenchers could vote against a Scottish parliament.

And the mouse roared 'U-turn.' (views on UK Labour party's attitude to Scottish politics)(Column)
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is making strong efforts to be seen to be tackling the issue of Scotland's political links with the rest of the UK. However, its approach seems to contain contradictory elements, and fails to take into account the real views of the Scottish people. The party originally promised to give Scotland greater control over its affairs, but now seems to be going back on this promise.
