Sales in the clothing and footwear retail sector are estimated at UKPd28,699 million in 2001, versus UKPd27,595 million in 2000. Retail prices for menswear, womenswear, childrenswear and footwear rose a combined 171.1 in January 2001, versus 166.6 in January 2000 and 163.4 in January 1999. Consumer expenditures for footwear, mens' and boyswear, women's and girlswear, and textile and soft furnishings rose to UKPd37,887 million in 2000, versus UKPd36,800 million in 1999. Sales trends and statistics are provided for individual sectors, including large clothing retailers, small clothing retailers, footwear retailers, and textile retailers.

In the United Kingdom, sportswear retailing is relatively diverse and somewhat fragmented. Precise figures are not available, but the country has an estimated 3,500 sports outlets, including such multiples as Blacks Leisure Group, JJB Sports, and All:sports. The specialist trade holds and estimated 50% share of the sportswear market. Consumers spent UKP3,030 million (including sales tax) on sportswear (including clothing and footwear) in 2001, versus UKPd2,950 million in 2000, at current prices. The UK market for sports goods was valued at 3.4 billion pounds sterling in 1998, up from 3.28 billion pounds in 1997. The sector, which accounts for 0.65% of total consumer expenditure, is made up of footwear, clothing, and equipment. Sports stores accounted for 29% of sales in 1998, with JJB Sports leading the market, followed by Allsports. The market is forecast to grow 22% by the year 2003.
