Security fears cast cloud on Labour's poll idyll
Article Abstract:
The UK's general election on May 1, 1997, was not marred by an IRA attack, as had been feared. However, security will remain high amid fears that the IRA may take action on the first day of the new government. On polling day, extra police officers were allocated to many of the 45,000 polling stations, and a number of surveillance operations were undertaken. There was particularly tight security around the home of Labour party leader Tony Blair. The IRA undertook two large bomb attacks immediately after the general election in 1992.

'The ceasefire is over': IRA bombers blast London
Article Abstract:
The placing by the IRA of a large bomb in the Docklands area of east London indicates that the 18-month ceasefire in Northern Ireland has come to a sudden end. The explosion left at least four people seriously injured and a further 34 in hospital. The bomb had been left in an underground garage in a six-storey office building near South Quay station on the Docklands Light Railway. The IRA had shortly beforehand announced that the complete cessation of military operations had been brought to an end.
