Self deprecation is the New Lassism

Article Abstract:

There is a fashion for self-deprecation among young women writers in the United Kingdom. They focus on problems with their romantic lives and present this as normal. They use humor and a confessional approach and have been parodied in the column by Bridget Jones, which has been very successful. This focus on emotions and domestic affairs implies that they are the main concerns of women, though there are many successful women who have brains as well as love lives. Women may appear less threatening if they portray themselves as failures, but men do not write about themselves in this way.

Happiness is a quiet week in Ulster

Article Abstract:

Journalists have been accused of focusing too much on negative vents in Northern Ireland, and there has been a week with many positive events. These include an investment by two foreign companies which will create many new jobs, and a planned concert by U2 in Belfast. The Sinn Fein president, Gerry Adams, has also met the United Kingdom Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam, the first such meeting since 1996. There are causes for concern, but a week of relative peace leads to hope for Northern Ireland.

Women and the lure of the drugs smuggler

Article Abstract:

Being accused of drugs smuggling can be an extremely traumatic experience for a young, innocent British woman, according to Lisa Roberts, who was herself placed in this position in France after having had drugs planted on her by her boyfriend's father. She was allowed no contact with her family, and was kept in poor conditions. She remains deeply emotionally affected by the incident. Her case is one of several which have taken place over recent years.
