Sensuality out of old brutalism
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Sauerbruch Hutton has incorporated a number of unusual features into the headquarters building it has designed for social housing organization GSW in Berlin, Germany. This building has been constructed from a converted 16-storey tower built in 1961. On the west side of the tower, which gets the sun, louvered mesh screens grouped at the window bays in threes produce a mosaic of reds. The building is very dynamic, with its external colours changing according to the light level requirements of the occupants.

Will it get a welcome in the hillside?
Article Abstract:
Secretary of State for Wales Ron Davies is expected to shortly endorse the selection of architect Richard Rogers' design for the new National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, England. In this design, the assembly will be accommodated on a slate plinth rising out of the sea. There will be a glazed ceiling where the public can walk, sheltered by a lightweight roof structure constructed of steel net. Lord Callaghan, who chaired the panel responsible for selecting the design, has hailed it as elegant and simple.

School prefabs get the designer touch
Article Abstract:
Portakabin, manufacturer of prefabricated buildings, has used designs from architects Richard Cottrell and Brian Vermeulen to produce prefabricated modules for nursery and primary schools. Strong emphasis has been placed on creating an attractive environment for children, with low benches, bright colours and sensitive use of space. The first nursery built using the system has been installed at a cost of 50,000 pounds sterling at St Alban's Roman Catholic Primary School in Harlow, England.
