Sex, lies and litigation
Article Abstract:
The number of cases being heard by employment tribunals in the UK has risen significantly over recent years. The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service believes that this trend reflects the fact that employees are becoming more willing to seek redress for their grievances. Some observers feel that this is a negative development, as employees are turning straight to the law instead of trying to resolve a problem through discussion and negotiation. The Industrial Society believes that employees should initially try to address problems through a one-to-one interview.

Article Abstract:
Office politics used to focus on organizational issues, but growing pressure in the work environment, particularly job insecurity, means that office politics will now much more frequently affect staff relations. This can bring particular problems for secretarial staff, who may fall victim to other members of staff seeking to assert their authority. It is important to find out as much as possible about office politics when you start a new job, as well as to develop ways of being assertive while also being seen as willing to fit in.

'Party on Saturday night? Sorry, I'll be at work.'
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for UK companies to introduce more flexible working patterns. Some companies find that this approach allows them to respond more easily to customer demands, while others find that it reduces employee absenteeism. However, there can also be disadvantages associated with flexible working. In some cases, flexible working patterns can encourage all employees to work too hard, while in other cases it can mean that employees are required to be constantly available.
