Mass production became a key feature of the 20th century, but production lines will not be nearly as dominant in the 21st century. This is partly because manufacturing now represents an increasingly small proportion of the economy of developed countries and partly because the number of people employed on production lines to make mass-produced goods is declining dramatically. Furthermore, a growing number of people are becoming prepared to pay for individually-made items, rather than mass-produced goods. Success in mass manufacturing is not as significant an aspect of economic success as it once was.

New European Commission Pres Romano Prodi faces significant challenges as he considers the most appropriate future development of the Commission. Most significantly, he must decide what sort of Commission Europe requires to assist it in becoming more competitive in relation to the rest of the world in the early decades of the 21st century. He should perhaps encourage the Commission to regard itself as something like a super development agency, responsible for ensuring continued economic success for European countries as new economic conditions emerge.

Don't be so gloomy about the Net, Mr Gates
Article Abstract:
Microsoft founder Bill Gates has expressed the view that most Internet-related investment will make negative returns. This is correct to the extent that the Internet makes much existing investment redundant. However, it is important to recognize that the Internet has a significant influence on the relationship between producers and consumers. This is reflected in trends including making factories more efficient. In the short term, using Internet technology will bring a competitive advantage.
