Bill Hilary, commissioning editor for youth programmes at Channel 4, believes in their importance, partly as a career route. He feels viewers attitudes rather than age colour their programme selection. Channel 4 offers questioning programmes such as 'The Word.' A Broadcasting Standards Council study shows 14.1% of 15-17-year-olds watch youth television programmes. Jane Hewland, ex-producer of 'Network 7,' feels that16-24-year-olds no longer function as a group and television should aim at 12-18-year-olds.

TV's 'doddering fools' answer back
Article Abstract:
Old people are under-represented on television. There are about 12 million elderly in the UK, more than there are school children, yet they are only a third as much shown on the screen. When they are shown they are often portrayed as lonely fools or victims whereas in reality they can have legitimate passions. The Centre for Policy on Ageing suggests a code whereby people's ages should not be mentioned on television unless strictly necessary and proportional representation would be achieved.
