Shirting the main issue
Article Abstract:
The current version of the standard contract for footballers in the UK was drawn up in the 1980s, and therefore fails to take account of issues raised by the significant rise in the 1990s in the wealth associated with football. This contract is now the subject of conflict between footballers and clubs. The Premier League working party, made up of four solicitors, is leading the negotiations over the revision of this contract on behalf of the football clubs. There are still significant areas of conflict to be resolved.

Rose Whitlock
Article Abstract:
Boatman Rose Whitlock grew up on her family's horse-drawn boat. She received little formal education, but she became extremely competent at steering. She succeeded her father when he died when she was only in her early 20s. She headed an all-female crew including her mother and her sister, and gained a detailed knowledge of skills such as knotting and splicing. Her family became one of three who worked the last fleet of six paired narrow-boats carrying cargoes.
