Shopping in contemporary style
Article Abstract:
Architect Thierry Despont has designed the new Ralph Lauren store in London, England. This store, which is to open on May 5, 1999, is the first that Despont has designed. The design, which features towering quoins and bronze mullions, bears traces of the influence of Luytens. The interior has both dark and blond wood, and the walls feature panels of white lacquer broken with pale suede and navy and green wool. Despont has shown great talent in handling the total interior space of 45,000 sq ft, of which 24,000 sq ft is retail space.

Norman's Berlin conquest
Article Abstract:
The renovation of the Reichstag building in Berlin, Germany, designed by architect Sir Norman Foster has take a very bold approach. Foster has been able to introduce natural light into the depths of this vast building, and has thus made it outward-looking for the 21st century. However, he has also been aware of the key role of the Reichstag in the history of Germany, and has therefore retained some fragments of the past and has installed paintings and sculptures relating the narrative of 20th century history.

In the eye of the beholder
Article Abstract:
Architect Norman Foster is having a very significant impact on the architecture of London, England. His projects include the first footbridge across the Thames for 100 years and the new Wembley Stadium. He has gained a particular reputation for expressing structure in a very lyrical way. He also recognizes the need to meet commercial demands, and this is why his design for the new Wembley Stadium includes a five-star, 200-bed hotel.
