Show us the big picture
Article Abstract:
The Serpentine Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Andreas Gursky - Photographs 1994-98.' Gursky's photographs tend to be very large, with 2.5 mt being a common width. They always look extremely rehearsed, regardless of the subject, and seem to hold much more than is actually visible. It is possible to regard Gurksy's photographs as seeking to be super-photographs, containing all the elements a normal photograph may wish to contain.

Africa is where we live
Article Abstract:
The Barbican in London, England, is staging an exhibition of the work of African photographers entitled 'Africa by Africa.' This exhibition includes the work of Malian photographer Seydou Keita. In sharp contrast with photographs of Africans taken by Europeans, Keita's work shows an instinctive sympathy between the photographer and the sitter. Keita allows the sitter to express a personal truth, rather than possessing the sitter.
