Sierra Leone dissolves into anarchy
Article Abstract:
Sierra Leone has now suffered four years of war, and the situation seems to be deteriorating even further. Many hundreds of people are entering the capital, Freetown, recounting experiences of attacks by men in uniform who could be rebels, government troops or bandit gangs. Civilians are desperate to escape the 'rebel war' in the provinces, and foreigners are leaving the country hurriedly. The country's government, the military junta known as the National Provisional Ruling Council, seems to have almost completely collapsed.

The rot set in a long time ago
Article Abstract:
South Africa's economy is nearly as poor as a Third World country as the majority of its income depends on the export of raw materials. Sanctions are given as the excuse for the poor economy, but mismanagement began much earlier. Political change promised the whites they would not have to relinquish power, so negotiations with Mr de Klerk continue. State spending has increased to 29% of GDP and state jobs have increased by 73% while industrial employment has declined.

'There is still time to save lives in Africa.' (UN warning on need for Western aid)
Article Abstract:
The UN World Food Programme stated that drought would cause the starvation and death of 40 million people in Africa unless further Western aid is forthcoming. The usual sources,America, the European Community and Japan, have pledged more food than previously but it is still 60% less than the amount needed. Southern Africa is short of 6.1 million tons of food in 1992. War and drought in the Horn of Africa has affected about 20 million people.
