Boat people out of sight, out of mind
Article Abstract:
There are 40,907 Vietnamese boat people in camps in Hong Kong and three quarters have been defined as non-refugees after screening. As such they do not qualify to be resettled in another country. Two thirds have been in Hong Kong for over three years but do not volunteer to return to Vietnam. Conditions are appalling for the inmates with gangs and no privacy. To encourage them to volunteer to go home, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to cut non-essential welfare services in the camps. This will mean that jobs done by over half the adults in the camps, at a maximum salary of 15 pounds sterling a month, will be cut.

'People just take their lives lightly.' (high suicide levels among women in rural China)
Article Abstract:
China has very high suicide levels among women, especially those living in rural areas. This goes strongly against the trend in the western world, where suicide is more common among men than women and tends to happen in cities, rather than in rural areas. Chinese women living in rural areas have a very low status, and suicide among these women has been common for many generations. Social reform is leading to more public discussion about this problem, however, and some efforts are being made to show rural women that there are alternatives to suicide.

Philippines still waiting for people power
Article Abstract:
Seven candidates are running for president in the Philippines on May 11 1992 but none of them satisfy the voters. Cory Aquino became President after the People Power revolution of 1986 but failed to meet expectations. The economy is poor and there is a power shortage. Social issues are only advocated by one candidate, Jovito Salonga, who is not popular. Gen Fidel Ramos, Eduardo 'Danding' Cojuangco and Ramon Mitra are likely winners. The election will also elect 24 senators, 200 congressmen and 17,014 local officials.
