Silence is broken on British role in dissidents' escape
Article Abstract:
Britain helped many Chinese dissidents who survived the Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing, China, when they sought to leave the country. There may have been 800 activists smuggled out of China, and the British role was not publicised due to the importance of Hong Kong as an escape route, and the need to avoid Chinese pressure on Hong Kong. Smuggling was carried out with the help of Triads, while Chinese officials were bribed. Chinese offocials may have been pleased to allow dissidents to leave, so long as there was no cause for confrontation.

The colony's last tango dancer prepares to take the final bow
Article Abstract:
Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, seems to be making a point of speaking very openly about Hong Kong's future under Chinese rule. He has attracted considerable criticism from China throughout his term as governor, and this has hampered progress on a number of important projects, including the new airport at Chek Lap Kok. He still has many appointments, and is determined to see the completion of his social and educational programmes.

Chinese offensive over HK's top job
Article Abstract:
The UK is attempting to ensure that Anson Chan, deputy and chief secretary of Hong Kong governor Chris Patten, becomes the new head of government in Hong Kong after China takes control there in 1997, according to Chinese media reports. China believes that the UK is making secret efforts to ensure the prolongment of its colonial influence over Hong Kong. This has been strongly denied by the UK.
