Netanyahu's coming war
Article Abstract:
Arabs who believe that they have been betrayed both by Israel and the US are likely to come into direct and serious conflict in the near future with right-wing forces in Israel, prompting a severe outbreak of violence in an as yet unknown part of the Middle East. If Israel president Benjamin Netanyahu is, as presidents Assad and Moubarak and King Hussein, believe, deliberately provoking the Arabs in order to completely eliminate any hope of a successful peace process, then the conflict could be most severe in southern Lebanon. This region acts as buffer zone between the Israeli army of occupation and United Nations-controlled areas.

Lebanon's oasis of freedom turns into a mirage
Article Abstract:
There are many ways in which Lebanon is not the centre of freedom and democracy in the Middle East, as it is often portrayed. There are frequent claims of bribery, fraud, electoral abuse and intimidation, and Syria retains very strong influence there. In the first round of the recent elections, it was reported that newly-naturalised Lebanese citizens were put under great pressure, being informed that they would lose their citizenship if they voted the wrong way.

Pope faces mission impossible in Lebanon's blood-soaked land
Article Abstract:
Pope John Paul II will enter a very sensitive situation as he makes a visit to Lebanon. There have been calls for him to expel Israelis from Beirut, Lebanon, and to drive the Syrians from Lebanon. He is also under pressure to denounce the alleged support by the Catholic Church for a right-wing militia. He is likely to express support for Lebanon's multi-confessional state, and may call for an end to human rights abuses.
