Sir Frank Roberts

Diplomat Frank Roberts performed very well in the Foreign Office entrance examination in 1930, and became Minister in Moscow, Russia, in 1944 at the age of only 38. His first overseas posting was to Paris, France, in 1932, and this was followed by a posting to Cairo, Egypt, in 1935. He was appointed Deputy High Commissioner in India in 1949, his only posting outside Europe. He was a key player in the British delegation at the Four Powers Conference in Berlin, Germany, in 1954.

Tony Mayer
Article Abstract:
Diplomat Tony Mayer played a key role in enhancing relations between the UK and France in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a gifted host, and was a leading figure during an era in which the arts flourished at the French Embassy in London, England. He constantly sought opportunities to boost the French presence in British life, and would often invite French authors and drama companies to the UK. His book about the English, 'La Vie anglaise,' was extremely popular in France.
