Sleaze by degrees
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly clear that some UK universities and colleges are guilty of mismanaging their overseas activities. In most cases, they regard their work abroad mainly as a way of raising urgently needed funds, and therefore do not always set up appropriate quality control mechanisms, as this would reduce their potential for making money. The UK Higher Education Quality Council is very concerned about this problem, and in 1996 sent auditors to check the overseas programmes of 15 UK higher education institutions.

The files that will put degrees in the shade
Article Abstract:
The UK's universities and colleges are being consulted about plans to introduce progress files for students. These files will detail each student's performance in each element of the course, and will also contain a personal development record. There have been mixed reactions so far to these plans. Some observers feel that there is a risk of information overload, causing problems for potential employers of graduates, who frequently only want a summary of students' abilities and achievements.

Come to sunny Cornwall, and feel degrees better ...
