Sleeping giants must wake up - fast
Article Abstract:
The UK market for independent boarding schools has fallen drastically during 1988-98, with 73 schools having merged or closed and the number of boarders declining 30%. Boarding fees cost around 15,000 pounds per year and schools appear to be mostly targetting busy middle-class parents. Boarding schools were traditionally perceived by wealthy parents as character-building and children were sent to board for development rather than for convenience or academic achievement. Some boarding schools claim to teach children citizenship.
