Safety by numbers
Article Abstract:
AutoSteve, a software program developed by researchers at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, could play a significant role in preventing aircraft crashes caused by equipment failure. This software undertakes Failure Mode Effects Analysis, in which all the electrical circuits in a product are tested. It forecasts each possible failure for all the components in the circuit and the repercussions of that failure. This has significant implications for aircraft and space shuttles, where there can be many repercussions from the failure of a single circuit.

Gaming is about to grow up
Article Abstract:
The computer games industry is seeking to extend the appeal of its products to a wider audience. Computer games have traditionally been seen as aimed at teenagers, and the industry will have to undergo a dramatic transformation in order to appeal to the profitable adult market. This transformation is set to be fuelled by the PlayStation II, Sony's new home entertainment console, due to be launched in early 2000. It is expected that this will be equipped with a DVD player and a modem.
