Where have all the Tories gone - they've left the scene one by one
Article Abstract:
Leading members of the UK Conservative party seem to lack purpose. Indeed, the shadow front bench appears to wish that it was doing a different job. The party's problems are being exacerbated by the fact that the Labour party has become sufficiently all-embracing to appeal to many mainstream Conservatives. The Conservative party gives the impression that it is yielding to the Labour party without receiving anything in compensation. It will not be able to repair its image until it has won the battle over the UK's participation in European economic and monetary union.

Tony makes them feel like dancing, but he frightens me
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has already taken a firm line with the Labour party, and is now adopting a similar approach with sections of the wider community such as business leaders, teachers and doctors. His speech at the 1998 Labour party conference contained coded warnings of toughness on many different issues, and represented a shift away from Blair's image as relaxed and accessible. He is taking the view that he is using the power of the state for social purposes most people will approve of.
