Considerable tension has arisen in the UK as supermarkets have launched own-brand products that very strongly resemble branded goods. This problem was the main driving force behind the creation of the British Brands Group, which involves manufacturers including Mars and Nestle. Some supermarkets are now beginning to shift away from closely emulating branded goods, and are seeking more innovative packaging designs. They are particularly interested in 'structural packaging,' which goes beyond ordinary printed packaging.

The 'Design, Strategy and Innovation' master of arts degree programme being offered by Brunel University, England, aims to introduce young designers to management skills. Students who have already graduated from the course have found employment which allows them to use their design skills at a strategic level.
