Some nuptials and a cremation
Article Abstract:
Heritage secretary Stephen Dorrell is placing a different emphasis on the arts from that which is traditionally expected of an arts minister. He is showing less interest in what is generally understood by the arts, and is placing more emphasis on the National Lottery and television. He is the first Conservative to hold the post who is still rising in his career, as the position usually goes to someone approaching retirement, and is making efforts to distinguish the new Department of National Heritage from the old Arts Ministry. Predictions for other developments in the arts in 1995 are also made.

Who's afraid of a gay soldier?
Article Abstract:
Recent reports that a Labour government would lift the ban on homosexuals serving in the armed forces have served to revive controversy about this issue. Many observers believe that homosexuals in the armed forces would have a negative impact on discipline and morale. However, most opposition to homosexuals serving in the armed forces is based on extreme prejudice and ignorance, and does not take into account that fact that a gay soldier is likely to be stronger and more courageous than a heterosexual one, as he has had to deal with a lot of criticism and prejudice.

Declaration of law
Article Abstract:
Legal thriller writer Richard North Petterson has recently published 'Eyes of a Child,' a sequel to his 1993 work 'Degree of Guilt.' Like many legal thriller writers in the US, he has direct experience of the legal system, having once been a lawyer. He focuses on the area of the US legal system where justice meets celebrity and politics, and has developed an ability to bring the reader inside the construction of a murder defence.
