The land that lies ahead
Article Abstract:
It is clear that positive land management is vital to the future of the countryside in the UK. Land rapidly deteriorates if it is not actively managed, causing a range of environmental problems. However, many farmers are now finding that farming is no longer economically viable and that they cannot afford to carry on. It is now vital that the government assists farmers in the tasks they really want to do, rather than allowing farming to decline to a point where farmers are forced to diversify into other activities and neglect their land.

Beware of a monster in the woods
Article Abstract:
The Treasury is considering privatisation of the Forestry Commission, which manages over 2.5 million acres of UK land. However, its value is about 700 million pounds sterling, insufficient to help the government. It is expected to break even in 1995 for the first time and output by 2022 will be double as trees planted in the 1930s mature. Millions of people use the forests for recreation and the Rambler's Association plan a 'Forbidden Britain' day in Sep 1993 to publicise what could be lost if the Forestry Commission were privatised.

When did you last see your ostrich?
Article Abstract:
Many people have begun to invest in ostriches over recent years, encouraged by reports that their meat sells for very high prices and that a breeding female can produce 50-100 eggs a year, each worth 100 pounds sterling. However, this can prove a disappointing investment. Particular problems have been caused by the collapse of the Ostrich Farming Corporation, which is now to be investigated by the Serious Fraud Office.
