Soul crazy, after all these years

Article Abstract:

Northern soul music is still extremely popular in the UK, although its fans have never really had a distinctive image. Many meet every year at a holiday camp in Norfolk for a long weekend of soul music. The organisers try to ensure that the event is reserved only for people who are seriously interested in soul music, but still many people have to be turned away. Soul music is now enjoying a revival, especially since the recent release of an Eighties Soul Weekender compilation album.

Just the ticket for abused traffic wardens

Article Abstract:

The Metropolitan Police Traffic Warden Training Centre offers traffic wardens a two-day course in inter-personal skills. They are taught how to deal with confrontation and how to manage stress. Workshops and role play show them how assertiveness and an inner voice of personal worth can help. They learn to speak calmly, check their posture and use eye contact. They are advised to appear to agree and to keep repeating their remarks when dealing with difficult people.

There have been a growing number of examples recently of publishers printing novels by writers who are still in their teens. This trend has attracted some criticism from older writers, who resent the large advances being offered to teenager writers. Some observers even believe that publishers deliberately select very young writers because this is guaranteed to attract publicity. However, it is clear that there is considerable demand for this type of novel.
