South Africa plays truth or dare
Article Abstract:
Black South Africans are testifying to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which aims to unite the country, although the prosecution of Dirk Coetze, ex-security police captain who defected to the African National Congress, could jeopardise the situation. Ellen Khuzwayo, black activist, now a Member of Parliament, has been giving evidence, and complaining about the National Party's attitude to the younger generation. Tim McNally, the KwaZulu Natal Attorney General, is now prosecuting Coetze on the grounds of new evidence, having previously decided not to bring a case.

The Protestant pretenders
Article Abstract:
David Ervine, spokesman for the fringe Progressive Unionist Party (PUP), is one of a number of leading loyalists in Northern Ireland who have turned from violence and have started to seek changes through political means instead. The peace process has sparked off a struggle for political leadership within the Protestant community, and has considerably boosted Ervine's popularity. He is putting his own life at risk for the cause of peace, recognising that if the peace process fails he will almost certainly be killed.

The union man vs the city slicker
Article Abstract:
Jim D'Avila, a local Labour party activist in Swindon, England, who enjoys the support of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU), was very surprised when in Sep 1995 he was defeated in a vote for the party's parliamentary candidate for the Swindon North constituency by Michael Wills, a London-based television producer. He has since protested about the legitimacy of the vote, and has succeeded in getting a court ruling barring Labour from endorsing Wills. The dispute has split the local party.
