Something in the way she moved ...
Article Abstract:
Isadora Duncan, who died in 1927, has become one of the most well-known dance artists of the 20th century. Her achievements were mainly posthumous, particularly her influence on German Expressionists and American modern dance artists. However, it must be remembered that she also had some negative aspects. She had an extremely strong belief in herself, and was very uncritical of her own performances. She was opposed to the advances of the 20th century, even though she saw herself as a fearless pioneer, and had an ambivalent attitude towards ballet.

The Royal Ballet - what's the big idea?
Article Abstract:
The Royal Ballet now seems to have accepted its second-class status at the Royal Opera House, and its 1995-96 repertoire is mainly made up of popular ballets rather than any new material. The lack of new work at the Royal Ballet has become a very serious problem, and its dancers, although able to cope with the most demanding traditional works, are now giving the appearance of looking for a new challenge. It is important to retain the UK's traditional dance heritage, but it is also time to give more attention to new works.

Two steps removed from dance
Article Abstract:
Choreographer Lindsay Kemp has established close links since the 1960s with leading figures in the art world, but has always remained outside the cultural mainstream. He is particularly keen to revive glamour in the theatre, and all his works have linked romantic, naive and vulgar elements. Fellow choreographer Rosemary Butcher has also always been an outsider. A lot of her work has a pared-down quality based in naturalistic movement, and she has connections with both dance and the visual arts.
