Sowing the seeds of discontent
Article Abstract:
Genetically modified (GM) foods have become an issue of considerable concern for many Britons since 1996. The GM foods debate has reflected the state of contemporary society, and has shown that ordinary people have become mistrustful of government, science and large companies. Well-managed campaigning by pressure groups has played a significant part in diminishing public confidence in GM foods. The Soil Association believes that the GM controversy has shown the government to lack understanding of public sentiment.

Battle of the hump
Article Abstract:
Many people believe that the more widespread use of road humps, which are designed to reduce traffic speed, will make the UK's roads safer. There are calls from across the country for 'traffic calming' measures and the removal of traffic from residential areas, and in some towns and cities groups have held demonstrations in the streets. However, many people dislike road humps, claiming that they damage car suspensions, increase pollution and slow down emergency vehicles.
