Sporting challenge for TV's crown jewels
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Advisory Group on Listed Events has recommended that satellite television be granted enhanced access to live sports events. These events would be divided into those which must be broadcast terrestrially and those which are only guaranteed highlights on terrestrial television. This development would have a particularly negative impact on the BBC, which may no longer be able to offer live coverage of some World Cup football home Test matches and all of Wimbledon fortnight, excluding the finals weekend.

It's time to stand up for the elitist view of television
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that television broadcasting in the UK should be completely unregulated, with schedules being determined by audience choice. They feel that commercial channels cannot compete if they are too strictly regulated, and that it is the task of the BBC to show all the programmes that commercial channels wish to avoid. This view is misguided, as eliminating regulation would reduce television programming to a very small range of talk shows, comedies and other lightweight programmes.
