Sterling's bumpy ride
Article Abstract:
The value of sterling has been very inconsistent, creating significant problems for UK businesses. The Bank of England wants sterling to remain high in order to avoid further interest rate rises, but its future value remains uncertain. The volatility of sterling is also causing problems for the government as it seeks to remain flexible on European monetary union membership. It is likely that stability against the euro will be impossible without a commitment to European monetary union, but the key condition for European monetary union membership is two years of stability.

Jobs divide that splits the nation
Article Abstract:
Clear disparities are emerging in the UK's economic performance. Service industries such as banking and computing are expanding rapidly, while manufacturing industry is declining. The labour market is fragmented and localized, with an individual's employment prospects being largely determined by the skills that person has to offer. There is strong demand for information technology skills, for example, while demand for traditional skills such as mining has fallen dramatically.
