Stern test lying round the corner for 'franc fort.' (views on French monetary policy)(Column)
Article Abstract:
France has been very strongly committed to the 'franc fort' for a number of years, but there have been several difficult periods recently which have cast a shadow over the wisdom of sticking to this policy. The French economy is reasonably healthy, with a current account surplus of around 1% of gross domestic product, and there are indications that the French franc is not overvalued against the German mark. However, some observers believe that statistics are misleading, and that the French franc is in fact overvalued.

Minimum wage debate is phoney
Article Abstract:
The Labour party and the TUC believe that a national minimum wage is the bests way to deal with low pay and poverty, while the Conservative party and the CBI feel that it would lead to the loss of jobs. In some ways, both sides are correct, but they are overlooking the much more important issue of how to upgrade the skills of the most poorly qualified and paid workers in order to allow them to escape the poverty trap. This is the only way to help the poorest people.

Investment alone will not solve Britain's problems
Article Abstract:
It is clear that the UK needs to attract higher levels of investment, and this is likely to take place in the later years of the 1990s. However, there is not necessarily a direct link between investment and economic growth, as implied by shadow chancellor Gordon Brown recently. Investment will rise as a result of growth in national savings, rather than through any incentives which a new Labour government may introduce.
